Abstract:

Many students take the availability of technology for granted and do not think about the bigger picture. This case study is designed to encourage students to think about their ethical, and ecological responsibility as individuals within their institutions/ecosystems with respect to E-waste. It is used to highlight how recycling of E-waste can have far-reaching social, political, ecological and economic effects. Designed for Grade 12 English class, the case could also be used in courses such as Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Stewardship, and Ethics, among others.

 

Objectives:

- Understand the basics of an ecosystem, and how a school is an ecosystem

- Understand the nature of E-waste

​- Appreciate the issues related to E-waste recycling

​- Explore the concepts of ecological footprint, stewardship, ethical responsibility
